I live just outside of Halifax, on Wright Lake where the views change daily with the sunrise, sunset, fog, rain, snow and yes, even sunshine! Although I paint lyrical, non-objective art, my work is inspired by my environment. The shape of the rugged landscape, the fluid movement of the water that surrounds us, find their way into the abstractions on my canvases.

How wonderful that the community comes together on this weekend to enjoy the cultural contributions of the province's residents. There is so much talent that needs to be celebrated. Afterglow makes art a fun and interactive way to showcase the many artists who contribute to the lifeblood of this province. I'm so delighted to be a part of it.

Sharing my art and being part of the greater community is important to me. My art is collaborative; without people absorbing it, it is incomplete. Sharing part of my process and allowing others to participate in the creation of a new large work, will be a great experience for all of us. I'm so delighted to be a part of Afterglow.

I'm actually really looking forward to displaying a range of my work together in the wonderful space provided by Afterglow and to meeting more local artists and seeing their work. It's also a great opportunity to meet new people and introduce them to my work.

THE UPS Store Bridgewater has been an ongoing supporter of the Afterglow Art Festival over the last few years. They understand the importance of art and culture and how it can help create a vibrant community where folks want to live, work and play. They have helped in creating beautiful signs that you will see shortly around Lunenburg County as a friendly reminder of the upcoming festival. Make sure next time you are in to thank them for their support of Afterglow Art Festival - a community initiative.

Weather Advisory is a family band (Sam: vocals and guitar, Sarah: keyboards, Jeff: drums) who hails from Upper Branch. Our music includes energetic boogie riffs as well as slower blues grooves. We also like to write songs about the local area and its features (such as the LaHave River or our train system that used to run through here.

We feel that Afterglow is a great festival that brings the artistic community together, bringing the arts to center stage for the public to see. After playing for this festival last year, we knew we had to take part again. Although there are a lot of festivals and events throughout the summer and fall season, we feel this festival is a must-see!  We’re looking forward to sharing our work and seeing everyone come out to see what all the artists have to share.

I enjoy taking part in the Afterglow Program. I can show off my work and meet everyone to talk about it.  I can, handle critiques. It is fun to share Art. This festival is a wonderful opportunity for myself and the community to be exposed to many types of Art forms. To be entertained, be inspired, and just simply have fun. I hope to meet you there.

After experience the Afterglow Festival as a participant during it's inaugural year, we at Lighthouse NOW knew we had to be involved because it aligns with our core values. It's a positive community event that brings together many sectors in one of the communities we serve, on King Street, one of the most important business areas in Bridgewater.  It showcased much of what we have to offer as a community and brings people from all walks of life to experience the downtown core. We are so fortunate to have so many hard working and creative volunteers to help put this together and we're so proud to be a part of it.

Dave Johnston aka. Chalkmaster Dave is a Toronto born artist currently living in Broad Cove. He paints in several mediums including acrylic, most know him best for his chalk art.

Chalk art is a type of street, or performance art goes back to 16th century Europe where artists would go from festival to festival and draw pictures in the town squares to delight the townsfolk, (and perhaps catch a few stray coins). Today you can attend festivals for this type of art all around the world. The modern form is 3D Chalk Art, also called 3D Sidewalk Art. One of the biggest attractions of chalk art is that it is as much about the performance as it is the final piece.

Chalkmaster Dave has been coast to coast in Canada and internationally performing at streets fairs and festivals.
Some of his clients also include Google, Pedigree, Coca Cola, Disney and the City of Toronto.

Check out some of his work on his website here and like his facebook as well. Stop down during Afterglow to see Chalkmaster Dave create an amazing piece right on King Street!
